Introduction:
(Witches Majiks And An Explanation)
Over the past two days I have been reading a few different manga that are fairly new, or have a fairly small following, as I believe those would be interesting to review, and it seems that is what you like to see. When doing this I found a few manga that I believe would make for interesting reviews. Ichi The Witch is one of these manga. To give a short synopsis of Ichi The Witch; in a world inhabited by dangerous creatures called "Majiks" there are witches who hunt these Majiks. The Witches get their powers by passing tests of friendly Majiks and one such Witch is an unlikely hunter named Ichi. This short synopsis glosses over somethings, but I will go over them soon.
Characters: An Unlikely Hero
(And Possibly A Little Stereotypical)
The first thing I look for in a Shonen manga is the characters, you can't have a good story without good characters and I'm glad to say that on this front Ichi The Witch mostly delivers. Our protagonist Ichi is an unlikely hero in several ways, the first of which being, he is male. One thing especially interesting about this world is that men typically cannot wield the power of Majiks. They even say that with all of the right circumstances, there would be a less than one percent chance of a man surviving if they tried to wield a Majik. However for a few reasons (that I won't go into for fear of spoilers) Ichi is able to weild the most powerful Majik that the witches have ever hunted. While this may be a bit stereotypical (The main character having ultimate power) it works. Another reason he is unlikely is that he doesn't even intend on getting his powers in the first place. Ichi is a hunter and only gets his power because he kills the Majik, it's just what he does. (Another slight stereotype, getting power on accident)
Humor: Pretty Good
(But Not Amazing)
The second thing I look at when reviewing a Shonen manga is the humor. Humor is one of the things that separates Shonen from other manga like Junji Ito's "Tomie" so for me it is very important and I must say, I am conflicted about the humor in Ichi The Witch I've reread all four chapters twice, and never once did I laugh out loud. However I don't think I'm dissatisfied, if you like the humor in Yugioh or maybe Naruto, you'll probably enjoy it, but I don't think It's as good as in Naruto or Dragon Ball Z, Maybe on par with Yugioh. Like I said I'm conflicted.
Story: So Far So Good
(But maybe to early To Tell)
This is the most important part of the review for me, which is why I save it for last. You can have a a bad cast or horrible humor and still have an acceptable manga if the story is good, in my opinion, and so far it has been pretty good. That being said, there are only four chapters, so it could change, but at least right now, what we have is pretty good. Currently the first two chapters are the best chapters because those are the most action packed, and it's when Ichi get's his powers, but I have faith that it will pick back up. If it doesn't, I could do an updated review if people want it.
Conclusion
Is Ichi The Witch the best manga in the world, the next new thing that will change the industry? Probably not. Is it worth reading? Especially if you have the Shonen Jump app and are willing to read digitally, since it's free there. Yes. Would I recommend it as your first manga? Probably not, although maybe once more volumes come out. Am I a little split? YES, but overall I did have a good time with Ichi The Witch, so it get's a recommend.
